September means not only new iPhone models but also a new version of IOS that can benefit most iPhone users. This year’s update is iOS 16 and it’s an unusually full of bigger visual changes than it has been in a long time.

iOS 16 is an unusually interesting update with many visual changes. The new customizable lock screen is the standout feature, which is not only fun to play with but also functional with new user interface elements.

Already when the iPhone starts for the first time after the update, you will notice one of the big changes in IOS 16. Apple has redesigned the lock screen, among other things, due to the watch with a noticeably larger font. If you don’t like the default font, you can also choose one of the other seven fonts shown in the extended settings for lock and home screens.
The clock is the only thing that changes automatically, but we really recommend you to visit it Settings -> Background
In addition to the built-in gadgets, Apple has opened up widgets from third-party apps from the start. A large number of apps have already been updated with support for it, including Streaks, Apollo for Reddit, and Halide. Each tool can have different shapes. The home page widget can show the climate or lights, for example, and Halide has shortcuts to different camera modes (so you can open the app directly to macro mode with a single tap).
The wallpapers themselves have also been updated and there is a whole new selection to choose from. Images with depth information (taken in portrait mode) can be displayed with depth effect so that the main subject is in front of the clock and instruments while the background is in the back. It is important here to find the right image that looks good without covering a large part of the screen.
For the nostalgic among us, there’s also a fond reunion: One of the new backgrounds is the classic photo of two clown fish, which is now having a profound effect.
Small changes in design and other things
Everywhere in IOS 16 we find subtle design changes. The video player is much simpler, the text editor menu is luminous instead of dark, all-new progress indicators and volume controls are no longer ‘clunk’. During ongoing Facetime calls, the box controls are no longer completely translucent and loose, so you can see more of the image from the interlocutor.
Speaking of news is that battery percentage is back in the front row. Apple accomplished this by placing the percentage in the battery icon, without any percentage sign. You activate it in Settings -> Battery
The Home app has a new design and many new practical features. At the top is a new row of shortcuts to display controls and information about different types of gadgets, such as climate (temperature, humidity, particle levels), lights, and security (cameras, locks, and motion detectors).

We don’t have space to list all the cool new things, but Messages, Mail, and Maps are among the apps that developers love a lot, and so is the Mac.
Some features are unlocked on newer models
If you have an iPhone X or earlier, you have to put up with a bunch of new functions that don’t work. The depth effect on the lock screen, for example, only works with built-in backgrounds, not your own photos. Other functions that require a phone with an A12 chip or better are the upgrade dictation function, automatic translations (not in Swedish) and above all the new ability to automatically hide the subject from the photo.
There is nothing to complain about?
If you’re the type who likes things to be in place and have a strong spatial perception of user interfaces, you’ll probably at least initially hate what iOS 16 did for notifications. Namely, they are placed at the bottom rather than the top of the lock screen and in the notification center. It can also appear as a stack instead, which we prefer, but it can take a while to get used to.
The other little things that lie a bit under you are the new search button at the bottom of the home screen (thankfully, you can turn it off Settings -> Home Screen
But overall, iOS 16 is a constant improvement, even over an old phone like the iPhone X. The new lock screen makes iOS feel fresh and exciting in a way it hasn’t in years. It also doesn’t feel noticeably slower.
