Khadi Sanya came out poorly in the third jump of the final in Munich. She started with a big step and the next day she was 30cm away from a perfect wooden strike and landed at a modest height of 6.26m.
Then she had to improve dramatically to be able to jump more. And it did by a narrow margin. The third jump was 6.47 metres.
Then I kept jumping more. The fifth jump measured 6.61 meters and was her longest. That was enough for sixth place and Sanya should keep waiting for his first medal in the outdoor championship.
– My cheeks are so tired. She did not recover, especially mentally. I knew she could do one or two long jumps max, coach Catherine Klubb tells SVT Sport.
The gold medal went to Serbian star Ivana Vulita, who said the European Union in Munich was her last major tournament. She recorded her best season with 7.06 meters. The silver medal was taken by German Malaika Mihambo and the bronze went to Jazmin Sawyers of Great Britain.
– That wasn’t enough for me today. But I did my best. Sagnia says its very good that this is over, I won’t lie.
The last time someone jumped over seven meters in an EC match in Budapest was in 1998 when Heik Drechler won over 7.16 metres.
In qualifying, Sagnia finished seventh with 6.59 as the longest jump.
