Since 2017 Polarium Made it possible to The American Tower Company (ATC) in Africa to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and climate footprint, by moving from diesel generators as the main fuel to their mobile sites, to energy storage based on lithium-ion batteries. Companies are now taking their partnership and shared vision of sustainability to the next level with a multi-million dollar agreement. Polarium is also setting up a new plant in South Africa to produce energy storage solutions for the African ATC markets.
Historically, storing energy for telecom companies and towers has been a costly problem. The majority of mobile sites in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to reliable electricity grids, and thus have had to use costly and polluting diesel generators as their main fuel.
The year 2017 included the Swedish company Polarium A strategic partnership with ATC – one of the world’s largest players in communications infrastructure with nearly 187,000 mobile phone sites – to drive the transition from diesel generators to energy storage based on lithium-ion technology as a power source for ATC’s portable sites in Africa.
“Increasing the share of renewable energy in our mobile sites is an important part of ATC’s sustainability program, and is fully in line with South Africa’s goal of adding more renewable energy sources to the energy mix and reducing dependence on coal by 2030. Having a partner like Lets Polarium gives you the potential to use renewable energy more efficiently. By switching to energy storage solutions from Polarium, we have reduced our emissions and our dependence on fossil fuels by 50 percent since 2018. ‘Tuoyo Ebigbeyi, Technology Director at ATC Africa, says.
The two companies are now taking the next step in their partnership, with a multi-million dollar agreement whereby ATC pledges to purchase additional energy storage based on lithium-ion batteries from Polarium. As a result, Polarium will establish a new plant in South Africa, to secure its delivery of thousands of energy storage solutions to ATC Africa markets in the coming years.
“We are delighted to be able to deepen our strategic partnership with ATC, as we strive to create a more sustainable communications infrastructure. Through this agreement, Polarium also enhances our operations in sub-Saharan Africa. Production at the new plant will be fully aligned with our goal of Our own operations are climate neutral by 2030 ”Stefan Janson, founder and CEO of Polarium, says.
This means Polarium will be produced on three continents – North America, Asia and Africa – boosting the company’s global value chain. The company is currently evaluating potential locations in South Africa to build the plant, which will create 200-300 jobs and direct assignments for the largest number of subcontractors. The plant is expected to be operational during the first half of 2022 and produce approximately 100,000 batteries per year, with the potential to increase production to 300,000 batteries per year.
