The applause from the stands at Liverpool was deafening when it was clear that bronze had been won. Because the truth is that Great Britain, the home country, has long looked like it is just short of a medal in the men’s team final.
The mistakes came on jumps, as James Hall initially lost his grip and fell. Then Joe Frazier faced the same fate.

But in the remaining events, the British gymnasts began to look increasingly settled.
The fact that Jake Jarman also started the evening with a standalone program that included, among other things, a three-and-a-half-bolt vault at the end, did not make matters worse. The bronze medal came a day after the British women took World Cup silver in their team final.
