Guide: This is what Queen Elizabeth’s last journey will look like

Sunday, September 11

The Queen’s Oak Casket travels by car on a six-hour route through several Scottish towns to the “Palace of Holyroodhouse” in central Edinburgh, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. There, the coffin rests in the throne room, awaiting King Charles and his wife Camilla, among others, who are traveling from London.

Monday, September 12

The casket then travels along Edinburgh’s parade route to St Giles Cathedral with members of the royal family. The coffin is here 24 hours a day.

Tuesday, September 13

On Tuesday afternoon, the coffin will be flown to London with Elizabeth’s daughter, Princess Anne, and immediately to Buckingham Palace.

Wednesday, September 14

At 15:22 Swedish time on Wednesday 14 September, Queen Elizabeth’s coffin will travel from Buckingham Palace via London to the Palace of Westminster.

King Charles leads behind the procession carrying the Queen’s coffin. During the procession, prayers are offered, the church bell Big Ben rings and tens of thousands of people are expected to fill the streets.

When the coffin arrives, it is placed in Westminster Hall, in the middle of the Great Hall of the Palace of Westminster. There, the coffin will be placed in a “lit de marche” as millions of Britons are expected to bid their final farewell to their Queen. The Great Casket is closely guarded 24 hours a day and Westminster Hall is open to the public 23 hours a day.

Monday, September 19

September 19 is funeral time and the day has been declared a national holiday in Great Britain.

On Monday, the coffin will travel a few hundred meters from Westminster Hall to the cathedral and Westminster Abbey for the funeral. Heads of State, former Prime Ministers and royal families of many countries will attend the event.

But it didn’t end there. After the funeral, the coffin will travel three miles to Windsor Castle and St George’s Chapel. There, Queen Elizabeth’s coffin will be lowered into the royal vault where, among others, Elizabeth’s parents and sister are already buried.
