Tytti Tuppurainen, Minister for Europe and Rights Governance, and Leo Docherty, the UK’s Minister for European Affairs, will meet in Helsinki on Wednesday 28 September. Dupurainen and Docherty will discuss bilateral relations between Finland and Great Britain, the security situation in Europe and support for Ukraine in the fight against Russia’s illegal aggression.
Bilateral relations between Finland and Great Britain are good and close, especially in terms of defense cooperation and trade. Cooperation will be intensified with Finland’s NATO membership. Ministers will also discuss the relationship between the EU and the UK after Brexit, how the Withdrawal Agreement and the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and the UK have contributed to smooth cooperation since its conclusion.
Ministers will also discuss the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Both Finland and the UK have stressed the importance of targeted and continued support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s illegal aggression, in line with the principles of the UN Charter.
During his visit to Finland, Minister Docherty will also meet with members of the Riksdag’s Foreign Affairs Committee and representatives of the Government’s Civil Service Administration.
