The Brits reached the final after a nerve-wracking semi-final against defending champions Sweden, where they came from 0-4 down to knock out Hasselborg in the tie-break.
However, the final was not exciting.
Japan surrendered
In the seventh round, Great Britain gained four points to lead 8-2. After two more British points in the ninth game, Japan captain Satsuki Fujisawa and her teammates gave up.
-This is a dream come true. I've lost in the semi-finals of the Olympics twice before, but I recovered and here we are now. We are Olympic champions, and it's a special moment, says captain Eve Muirhead BBC.
The men took the silver
This gold is Britain's second medal at the Beijing Olympics. The country's men's curlers take home the silver medal after losing to Sweden's Eden in the men's curling final last Saturday.
The Swedish team is coached by Christian Lindström, who grew up in Östersund but lives in Uppsala. As a player, he was part of the Lage Eden team (which won the men's championship, bringing them the European Championship and World Cup in 2014 and 2015.
