England is ready for the round of 16 in the World Cup. Phil Neville's side achieved their second successive victory when they beat Argentina after a huge 1-0 lead.

Argentina were responsible for the biggest shock of the first group stage when they drew 0-0 with World Cup finalists in the last tournament, Japan.

The happy amateurs from Argentina also made life miserable for world number three England. Although England controlled the course of the match, it was difficult to create scoring opportunities.

The heated positions they took saved the great Argentine goalkeeper, Vanina Correa. The experienced cage-keeper saved, among other things, a penalty kick from Nikita Parris in the first half.

Argentina's attacking play was straightforward

The decision was made just over an hour later. England carried out a typical attack that ended with a cross to left winger Beth Mead that found Jodi Taylor. The English spearhead was clearly finished.

After that, there was no question which team would win the match. Argentina had no attacking game to speak of and England were closer to making it 2-0 than taking a cold Argentine shower.

Thanks to the victory, England leads Group D with six points. Japan is in second place with four points, while Argentina has one goal and Scotland has zero.

In the final round, England plays Japan, and Argentina plays Scotland. The two matches will be held on Wednesday.
