The Communities Minister meets other British Sports Ministers at the World Athletics Championships in Glasgow

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons met with sport ministers from other countries in Glasgow today to discuss strategic priorities for sport across the UK.

After the meeting, Minister Lyons said:

“It was great to meet my counterparts from other parts of the UK and share our vision for sport for the future. As the Minister responsible for all sports in Northern Ireland, I am keen to increase any opportunities for more people to get active and take part in a range of sports. Specifically to expand the horizons of participation of women, girls and people with disabilities in sports at all levels.

The inter-ministerial group on sports is attended by heads of sports councils along with other senior officials, providing an opportunity to move forward on areas of common interest. The group has also been able to take part in some of the World Athletics Championships currently being held at Emirates Arena in Glasgow, an opportunity to watch the dedicated athletes perform at the pinnacle of their sport.

Minister Lyons added:

“It was particularly interesting to discuss funding for grassroots sports and I look forward to continuing the conversation with UK Sports Minister Stuart Andrew MP during his visit to Northern Ireland next week.”
