Swedish silver when OK WC was set at Marstrand

Swedish silver when OK WC was set at Marstrand

There was only 0.4 points between leader Charlie Compley of Great Britain and Swede Niklas Adler of the Royal Swedish Sailing Society when the final day was due to start on Friday morning. But the weather did not allow sailing, although they waited steadfastly for some wind until the last moment. And so it was a British gold, a Swedish silver and a Norwegian bronze when the awards ceremony began in the evening.

Marstrand’s SS was the organizer for the tournament, which took place 50 years after the WC held OK-Jolle for the first time in the city. Although Friday’s races were canceled, there was good sailing weather for the rest of the week, and MSS boss Marcus Bloomberg is very satisfied with the week.

– It’s been four wonderful days. Perfect conditions with bright sunshine and five to seven meters per second, so the Swedish summer was at its best. All competitors were very satisfied with the competition and ranking. Then they also think it’s exciting to be able to sail the Marstrandsfjorden. It’s one of the top five sailing spots in the world, so it’s legendary waters. He says something we are experiencing here is easily forgotten.

For the first time last year

The best Swede during the competition was Niklas Edler, who was satisfied with the week after the awards ceremony, but admitted that it was sad that the last day of the competition was cancelled.

– It’s mixed feelings, but basically I’m very satisfied, because I came from behind and sailed better and better during the regatta. Then I wanted to get in today’s race because it was so close to number one, he says.

The conditions at Marstrandsfjorden are also something the silver medalist says he was looking forward to. Niklas Adler’s next prediction was that there would be good sailing, something he believed lived up to expectations.

– We’ve had the effect of running out of here all the time. He says it makes it a bit hard to find a good strategy and it becomes hard to navigate.

There were more Swedes among the top ten. In sixth place was Marstrand’s Jonas Kvist in the ranks of the SS, and in eighth place was Teufkels sailor Daniel Björndahl. The latter did his first World Cup at OK-Dinghy and told us he made his first class cruise as recently as last fall.

– I started last fall because my brother encouraged me to start sailing with the E-Dingle, but I don’t have the weight for that. So I started with OK instead. But I have a lot of experience sailing but in other classes including optimist racing and bouts, says Daniel Björndahl.

He was hoping to get the top fifteen and was able to achieve his goal by a good margin. But he is not completely satisfied with his performance.

– I sailed well and fast but I made some stupid mistakes. Among other things, I was flooded in the second race, and you’re clearly not completely satisfied, because I had a chance of getting better jobs, he says.

The next competition for Daniel Björdahl and Niklas Edler will be SM at OK-Dingle, which begins in a few weeks in Kalmar. For Marstrand’s SS, it will be a lot quieter when it comes to competitions. At least when it comes to arranging them.

– We have rejected several major events. There are a lot of people who want to come here and sail. We did the Golden Dragon Cup last year and it was the OK-Dinghy WC this year, and now we’ve been taking things easy for a few years. In 2025, we’ll see if we can bring the restroom here at 12, but no decision has been made yet, work is in progress, says CEO Marcus Bloomberg.
