On Monday, Danish authorities detained a Russian research vessel off Skagen in Jutland, Jutland. Behind the intervention are a million claims from Canada.
The ship is owned by a Russian state-owned research institute, but was chartered a few years ago by a Canadian cruise company. In the summer of 2018, the ship ran aground, resulting in the cancellation of a cruise, according to a report by TV2 Nord.
The responsibility for the grounding rests with the Russian crew, according to the Canadian company, which for some time has demanded compensation equivalent to about 40 million Swedish kronor.
The Russian owner did not pay the amount, and an administrative court in Hjørring has asked for a guarantee for the full amount, according to news agency Ritzau.
On Thursday, a Russian military ship was seen in various naval traffic sites near the seized ship, which drew attention. The Danish defense denied that such a ship was in an area outside the port of Skagen, and defense researchers told Danish media that someone may have deliberately manipulated the so-called AIS website to be deceived.
