Thousands of Britons have thronged the streets of London to witness King Charles’ birthday parade. Actually, her birthday is in November – but in England the royal family celebrates it twice a year privately and once officially.
Around 1,400 soldiers, 400 musicians and 200 horses participate in the parade on horseback. It will be the first time since 1986 that a British monarch will ride in the annual ‘Trooping the Colour’ military parade.
Holding the parade in June is a tradition that began in 1748 under King George II, who wanted to celebrate his actual birthday in October in better-than-expected weather.
