Garmin Launches inReach Messenger Plus App

While many companies are investing in satellite communications with cell phones, Garmin has chosen to take a slightly different path. The company has been offering global satellite communications for years with its inReach technology and devices like the inReach Messenger and inReach Mini 2.

Now the company is introducing the Garmin inReach Messenger Plus, which has the ability to send both photos and voice messages, in addition to the ability to send and receive text messages, share the user's location, and use SOS functions.

As with inReach devices, inReach Messenger Plus can be used as a completely standalone device without the need for a mobile phone to update your contacts on your progress, send location updates, start and stop tracking and send SOS messages directly from the device.

The Garmin inReach Messenger Plus is IPX7 rated so it can withstand being submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes. The battery should last for 600 hours if the device sends an update every ten minutes, but depending on usage and power mode, the battery could last for months. It can also be used to charge a mobile phone in an emergency.

The Garmin inReach Messenger Plus costs SEK 5,949, and a subscription is also required, which costs SEK 200 per month.
