The James Webb telescope found the first exoplanet. Planet LHS 475 b is located 41 light-years from Earth.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has now found the first exoplanet, that is, a planet outside our own solar system. The image above shows an illustration of the newly discovered exoplanet with its star, which is called a red dwarf. It takes about two days for the planet to make one revolution around it.

Named LHS 475 b, the newly discovered exoplanet has a size that corresponds to 99 percent that of Earth and is “only” 41 light-years from Earth in the star constellation Octane. So far, scientists have not been able to say whether the newly discovered planet has an atmosphere, but they say it could have a carbon dioxide atmosphere. This is something that needs to be investigated with more observations.

LHS 475 b has a temperature a few hundred degrees warmer than Earth, which means it probably wouldn’t be very habitable. Scientists think the planet’s conditions may be more similar to those on Venus than here on Earth.
