After Tuesday, there are eight politicians vying for the position of Boris Johnson’s successor in the Conservative Party. In a new vote on Wednesday, the support of 30 MPs is needed to move forward, after which the number of candidates is expected to be lower.
Conservative MPs vote at 2:30 p.m. Swedish time, with the result expected at 6 p.m.
Eight candidates made it past Tuesday’s period, when 20 nominations of MPs were required to advance to today’s vote.
It’s an exciting knockout competition, says foreign correspondent Rolf Fredrickson.
According to British media, former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak and Deputy Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt are the candidates.
By Thursday, July 21, there are supposed to be only two candidates, and the result will be announced on September 5. Elections over the summer are decided by mail voting by approximately 160,000 Conservative Party members.
