Heavy setback for the Premier League
According to Agence France-Presse, English clubs’ farewell to the Premier League means the entire planned soccer league will fail – before it has time to start.
Of the twelve clubs that were originally supposed to be in the “elite soccer sandbox”, only half are left: Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid from Spain, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus from Italy.
Alexander Ceferin, President of UEFA and UEFA President, thanked English clubs for their decision. According to the BBC, Ceferin stressed the need to focus on monotheism.
“It’s not a sport if the losses don’t matter.”
The planned Premier League has received heavy criticism from all possible quarters, not least from the football federations FIFA and UEFA who are threatening to ban players and clubs that play with or in the Premier League.
There has also been criticism from fans who want to see their favorite clubs play in the local series and in European club championships that already exist.
The project has also received setbacks at the highest political level, and among other things, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reportedly said he is doing his best to prevent Superliga’s plans from progressing. According to Sky News, the Premier has described the league as a cartel.
The project has also faced patrols from within the same branch. Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has harshly criticized the sport, or rather the lack of sport, in the Premier League.
It is not a sport if there is no relationship between effort and salary. It is not a sport if success is pre-sealed. Guardiola told a news conference that it is not a sport if the losses are not significant.
