More than 25,000 people have been forced to flee California wildfires.

More than 25,000 people have been forced to flee California wildfires.

The out-of-control fire has burned more than 1,400 hectares of land near the town of Oroville since it broke out Tuesday morning. Some 25,000 people have been told to leave their homes to escape the blaze, which has left evacuation centres in the area overwhelmed.

No deaths have been reported so far, but eight have been injured, according to California Emergency Services. NBCFour buildings are said to have been destroyed and 1,200 others are threatened by the fire.

The extreme heat that has hit the state this week, coupled with strong winds, is making the fire extremely difficult to control, according to Oroville Mayor David Pittman.

“We have winds blowing in several different directions, pushing the fire forward,” he told The New York Times.

About 1,500 firefighters are currently battling the blaze, according to NBC.

The big celebration of Oroville’s National Day of America fireworks display, which typically draws more than 10,000 people to the city, has been canceled so emergency services can focus solely on putting out the fires. There are concerns that residents’ fireworks celebrations will spark more fires in the area. Authorities have discouraged the use of fireworks but have not banned their sale.

In recent years, Oroville and the surrounding area have been plagued by numerous wildfires. The deadliest wildfire in American history broke out just 30 kilometers from Oroville, in the town of Paradise, in 2018. The town was completely destroyed and 85 people died.
