Coop’s biggest problem – blaming regular customers

Organized gangs have been established many times to steal large quantities of meat and other luxury items from grocery stores.

This is no longer the case everywhere.

Instead, Skanska Talkblade reports that “ordinary Svenssons” are completely clearing the shelves of ordinary basics.

– Every day we see empty packaging on the shelves, or products gone from the warehouse stock, Magnus Johnson, store manager of Stora Coop in Eslo, tells the newspaper.

There is a significant change in terms of both the number of criminals and the amount stolen.

For example, expensive meat, sausage, instant macaroni, ketchup and other everyday foods are stolen.

– Diapers and baby food are also stolen, as is coffee. Earlier, more luxury goods were stolen, says Magnus Johnson.

Big problems

The store manager said the theft was not a specific group.

Both youths and families with children are singled out among those who steal food from the coop.

Magnus Jönsson himself calls this a “terrifying development”, after all it has contributed to an increase in the number of threatening situations in stores.

His theory is that people steal because of economic circumstances, for example parents steal to give gifts to their children.

And this creates huge problems for the chain store in terms of financial losses, but also steals resources from employees who have to deal with all the paperwork after each individual store theft.

15 year old girls

Some Coop shops are also open during unmanned hours.

Customers log in, scan their items themselves and pay.

But this idea has ended due to thefts in some places.

In other matters in Piteå, earlier this year two girls aged 15 and 16 were fined daily after stealing from such a coop shop.

– It is important for parents to talk to their children about punishment and responsibility. We report all thefts to the police and review footage when we suspect a crime, store manager Anneli Olofsson tells Piteå-Tidningen.

Port customers

At the same store, a 30-year-old man was recently arrested after repeatedly stealing packages of minced meat.

The access ban applies for one year.

– If he appears, we call on the guards to send him back as soon as possible, says Anneli Olofsson.
