Tomorrow, the idea was to start the World Cup in Lydden Hill, England. But during the day on Friday, it was reported that two cars belonging to the French team Sebastien Loeb and Guerlain Ceccheri had started burning.
Videos spread on social media show flames and black smoke rising from the competition area.
“Fire personnel are on site. The site is not open to the public today, and no injuries have been reported,” the race organizer wrote On Twitter.
Expert: “So it’s a serious security problem.”
The cars have been destroyed, so it looks like only eight cars (out of ten) will start when the races start on Saturday.
– It’s of course not good for anyone involved. It is unclear what caused the fire. It could be anything, for example human error, says SVT sports expert Jonas Kruse.
– If the cause is charging batteries, this is a very serious safety issue.
Sébastien Loeb writes thus on social media about what happened:
He added: “After the fire broke out, the first important news was that no one in the team was injured. All my thoughts go to the team that is working on this project with determination, and after that everything turned into smoke.”
During the day, the local fire department urged people in the vicinity to keep windows and doors closed.
“People near Leaden Hill and in Wootton and Canterbury are advised to close windows and doors due to smoke from the car fire,” he wrote. Kent Fire and Rescue Service On Twitter.
There will be no competition on Saturday. The organizer will hold meetings during the day to find out what happened. A shorter competition program will likely take place on Sunday.
If the competition is cancelled, SVT will be broadcast on Sunday.
