The house rat is an increasingly popular pet, and many choose it over a dog, cat or rabbit. Nicole Flood, from Jönköping, is the one who really got hooked on a rat as a pet. She has six mice in the house – and they all have their own little personalities. Nicole explains that the rat Monty is a little afraid, Mario is mostly curious and Albino is a little shy, and she sees the rats a bit like her children.

– I feel like a mother and I want to take care of them. She’s so young, cute and innocent.”

But Nicole’s mice aren’t just cute, charming, and stylish—they can also make art. According to Nicole, mice are easier to teach the arts than dogs are. Among other things, they can spin and play by following John.

– They are very adorable and very smart animals. If I lay on the ground, Nicole says, they follow me.

Mice are pack animals and thrive best when allowed to live with other mice And for Nicole’s rats, the favorite place is the hood of the car.

– They like cozy places, you say.

Why rat as a pet?

Despite its bad reputation, the rat has many advantages and wonderful qualities. A house rat can become incredibly tame and personable, easy to care for and not very demanding of its owner. He quickly learns who is master or mistress and loves to be in the center of the action – and the Rat develops more and more personality the more you give him attention.
