SSD performance drops in the latest Windows 11

At the end of February, Microsoft rolled out a major update for Windows 11, more specifically the update with the name “Moment 2”. It included everything from bug fixes to several major new features, including video functionality to a screen snipping tool, notepad tabs, and new search fields with the new AI-powered Bing integration.

However, the update didn’t just bring golden and green forests. While it appears that some issues have been fixed, two new ones have been introduced. Among other things, many users reported that SSD performance decreased significantly after installing the new update, with read and write speeds nearly halving in some cases.

The left shows the results with the update, while the right shows the results without the update installed.

The problem is highlighted, among others Newen, which also points to screenshots from users who have documented speeds with Crystal Disk Mark. In addition, many posts were cited from users who reported feeling, for example, that load times in games and the time it took to start the computer increased significantly.

The exact cause of the problem is not clear, but it seems to mainly affect users with NVME devices. Downgrading before the update was reported solves it temporarily, i.e. uninstalling “Moment 2”, also called build KB5023706.

Have you noticed any difference in performance with the latest version of Windows 11?
