Cost to enter UK soon

Foreign visitors, even those from visa-exempt countries, should apply for permission to enter the UK via an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) as soon as possible. Text: Janne Sundling

“We don’t know the cost of the ETA – but the government has said it will be small”

The UK Government is aiming to digitize UK borders by the end of 2025 – and the ETA system will play a key role.

The system will come into effect by the end of 2023, and visitors will have to fill an online application granting permission to enter. Similar to how the US’s own ESTA system works – the application involves a fee.

It is not a visa – ETA system that allows travelers to enter the country. But you need to apply for ETA before arrival otherwise you may be fined.

Passengers are requested to apply for ETA a few days before their journey. Approval should be given within 72 hours of application.

After the ETA is approved, the visitor is allowed to stay in the UK for six months for business or tourism.

The UK government has yet to confirm how often visitors will need to apply for the new ETA, but it will be valid for two years.

We don’t know the cost of an ETA – but the government has said it will be small. The European Union implemented a similar system in 2022, costing 7 euros. A US ESTA costs 21 dollars.

The full list of countries to be covered by the ETA is yet to be announced. Although the US, Canada and Australia are visa exempt, they still need to apply for an ETA. European countries are also likely to be included. Those traveling from countries without a visa-free agreement with the UK must still apply for another type of UK visa that is applicable.
