Netflix announced yesterday that its ad-supported subscription will begin in 12 markets on November 3. In the US, the new Netflix subscription is called “Basic with Ads” and it will cost $7 per month there.
Basic with Ads will run commercials for 4-5 minutes per hour, before and during broadcasts. It will not be possible to download Netflix content if the basic subscription is turned on with ads and the highest resolution available is 720p. In addition, part of the Netflix catalog will not be available on Basic with Ads due to various rights, Netflix wrote in a press release. Movies and TV shows will be 10 percent less than what’s included in other Netflix subscriptions. Finally, it will also be possible to watch Netflix on only one device at a time with the new subscription.
In addition to the United States, Basic with Ads will launch in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. There is no information yet on when Netflix ad subscriptions will eventually be available in Sweden.
