The champion has ended his career but refuses to quit the sport – which is what racing icon Rickard Riedel does today

He won LeMans and had several World Cup victories.
Rickard Riedel has not given up on motorsport yet.
This is how the legend lives today.

Rickard Riedel has spent over 20 years mastering the ultimate in motorsports. He started his career when he made his Swedish F3 debut in 1986, and only the following year there were double victories and second place in the championship. After several years in the UK and Japan (where, among other things, there was a win in Macau) and the Formula 3 championship, in 1994, it was a move again to England and an investment in standard motor racing.

Incredible career

It was also then that the results began to emerge, and Riddle emerged as a world celebrity. In the 1988 season, for example, there were 17 places (!) on the podium, five wins and champions in the British Touring Car Championship. Once the European Touring Car Championship became a world championship, and the WTCC became, there were also victories there. But it was also, in 2007, a win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans classic.

After a few years of Riddell being criticized by his team, Seat, he chose in 2010 to end his career. But he did return the following year when the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship started. Then he drove a Chevrolet – and he won straight in the first race. After a great season, the last race was all decided, but after months (!) of drama, when the best cyclists reported each other for driving against yellow flags and aggressive driving, Riddle was the winner.

does today

Rydell has ended his career multiple times, but after several attempts to come back, the news came in 2016 that he would definitely be ending his career.

– You remember the victors. It was the victory in the Macau unofficial water course in 1992, and the victory in the BTCC Championship in 1998, when I won the LeMans title with Aston Martin in 2007. Then it was a great year at WTCC where I was on top, winning races, quickest qualifying and we won With the WC brand. He said it was also fun to finish with STC as I won the title in 2011.

On the other hand, Riddle has not disappeared from the world of motorsports. Still today an expert commentator for Viasat Motor, he also has a helping hand with the talented younger Swedish riders. Among others, through the annual “Rydell Special Award”, which is given at the Motorsport Gala every year.
