The British Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) today decided to pay ar 17 million in fines equivalent to about 205 million kroner for the controversial face recognition company Clearview AI.

The ICO believes that Clearview AI has violated UK data laws by collecting millions of images of UK citizens from social media without informing them. Following today’s decision, ICO President Elizabeth Denham said in a statement:

“I have significant concerns that personal data in the UK may have been processed in a way that no one expected. To enjoy, technology providers must ensure that people’s legal protections are respected and complied with. “

Clearview AI is an American company that has collected over 3 billion images from social media profiles and then used them in the identification service sold to their customers. Clearview AI’s service was tested by Swedish police, which led to the imposition of IMY fines on police officers found to have violated the Criminal Data Act.
