With more and more ‘self-driving’ vehicles on the road, Britain decided later this year to allow drivers of self-driving vehicles to watch TV from the infotainment screen in self-driving mode, as long as they are ready to take back control. It’s an amendment to a law in place since 1986 that prohibits drivers from looking at a “TV receiver” while driving in the country.

However, drivers in the country are still not allowed to use their phones, which they were banned from doing last year. The reason one is approved but not the other is that car manufacturers can build features that stop content playback if the car requires the driver to take over. Insurers, not individuals, are also set to be liable in more circumstances than before (but it’s unclear exactly which ones). The changes are temporary and will likely apply until an entirely new set of rules can be introduced by 2025 at the latest.

Self-driving cars are not yet legal in the UK, but the country’s authorities say they could be before the end of 2022.
