Primary elections were held Tuesday in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Vermont and Connecticut. In Wisconsin, businessman Tim Michaels, backed by Donald Trump, won.
The Connecticut primaries were also held on Tuesday. There, somewhat unexpectedly, Leora Levi was chosen. The surprising result can be explained by the fact that just hours before the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago home on Monday, Donald Trump held a rally in favor of Leora Levy – which is believed to have influenced the outcome of the election.
As Trump supporters gain ground, ten Republican Trump critics in Congress have resigned or lost their primaries. This means that Donald Trump is now seen as consolidating his grip on the party.
But the primaries were also successful for women. In Minnesota, Democrat Ilhan Omar narrowly won the primaries. Omar, belongs to “The Squad”, a group of female members of the House of Representatives in the leftist phalanx of Democrats. She won by a few percent.
In Vermont, Democrat Becca Ballint won, who could now become the first woman to represent the state in Congress.
Primary elections are when parties must select candidates who will run in the general election.
Primary elections in the United States take place from May to September.
In parallel, a large number of elections for state governors as well as elections for state, city and local councils are held in many places in the United States.
The 2022 US midterm elections will be held on November 8. Then all 435 members of the House of Representatives and one-third of the 100 members of the Senate must be reelected.
