Trump made up his mind – to run in 2024

Although there is just over a year until the primary, the battle continues apace. Potential presidential candidates try to position themselves and gather support and money. The next step will be for more of them to announce their candidacy publicly.

Campaigns this summer will be in full swing. Candidates will spend a lot of time in key states getting to know themselves before the primaries, says Dag Blank, professor of North American studies at Uppsala University.

Among the names mentioned on the Republican side, in addition to Trump, are not least Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

Summer 2024

Officially, the process for parties to nominate their presidential candidate begins with the respective state’s primary elections. Then party members appoint delegates to the party convention — which will take place in the summer of 2024. But the primaries don’t start until spring and winter 2024, either.

The first takes place in Iowa, followed by New Hampshire, and then the various states follow as if on a string of pearls. The first primaries always get the most attention, Blank says, and that can have a big impact on what goes on.

The candidate who gets the most delegates in the early primary hopes to outpace the competition in the future. Once the delegates meet at the party convention, it is often known in advance which candidate has the strongest support.
