The LED panel consumes 80 percent less energy on average than traditional light bulbs and is easy to install in suspended ceilings. So it’s no surprise that this light source has become a popular choice in many office environments. However, Hylvi Heimvala, an optometrist and university lecturer in synergistics at Lund University of Technology, says LED panels can cause serious health problems.
Regular LED panels are the worst light solution for the eyes. It’s dazzling and creates contrast that makes it difficult to focus. Some Christmas lights can also cause major problems due to flickering, or invisible flicker (TLM), which can cause headaches, she says in a commentary.
She points out that glare and flicker are the two main problems related to light in our workplaces. Lights and screens that are misdirected or poorly adjusted can lead to fatigue and difficulty concentrating.
– Common side effects are eye fatigue, light sensitivity and diplopia, i.e. double vision, says Helvi Hemphala.
Furthermore, she says, approximately 20 to 40 percent of the population is supposed to be more sensitive to glare and flicker.
– There are a lot of people who are affected and it also affects companies as the ability to work becomes significantly worse. Fortunately, most things can be solved with the right lighting and glasses, concludes Helvi Hemphala.
