Astronomers at the University of Leicester’s School of Physics and Astronomy have published their findings in a report in the journal nature. There they describe how the star and supermassive black hole Swift J0230 undergoes a process that has not been observed before.
Normally, similar stars are completely destroyed by black holes in their vicinity. But that is not the case this time.
Instead, the process is done gradually.
“exciting addition”
The star is about the same size as our sun. On repeated occasions, parts of its atmosphere have been “flaked off” and consumed by the black hole. According to the researchers, the shredded pieces are described as being three times the size of Earth.
The star and black hole are about 500 million light-years away.
– In most systems we’ve seen before, the star has been completely destroyed. Swift J0230 is an exciting addition to the class of partially turbulent stars, says researcher Rob Eyles-Ferris in an article. statement.
Researchers: I think there’s more
According to the researchers, it is likely that there are more similar processes underway waiting to be discovered.
“Given that we found Swift J0230 just a few months after activating the new transient search tool, we expect there will be many more objects like this waiting to be discovered,” said Kim Page, who worked on the data analysis for the study. , in the current situation.
