Destiny, 22, was home in her ninth-floor apartment when satellite dishes, washing lines and buildings started swaying outside her window.
It was a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.6 that affected large parts of Mexico.
– I was completely panicked, I felt like I was on a boat that was swaying, says Destiny, who lives in Mexico City.
On Monday, several festivities were held around Mexico to commemorate the two deadly earthquakes that occurred on today’s date, September 19, in both 1985 and 2017.
An earthquake warning test is also conducted on this day every year. Sweden’s Destiny Amin, 22, an exchange student at Mexico City The test alarm was heard at 12 noon local time.
Nobody really cared, everybody knew it was just a test, she says.
40 minutes later she was sitting at home talking to her mother on FaceTime. Suddenly I felt that something was not right.
– At first I thought I ate something bad. Everything started swaying and the land felt like waves on the ocean, Destiny explains.
It turned out to be a 7.6-magnitude earthquake at its epicenter. The earthquake was felt strongly in Mexico City.
He lives on the ninth floor
Destiny lives on the ninth floor of a high-rise building. When the earthquake struck, I looked out the window. Then she saw satellite dishes, washing lines, and buildings shaking violently.
– Everything is swinging! I totally panicked and wished this earthquake wasn’t as strong as previous years.
She took the phone with her and ran floor to floor. By this time there were a lot of people on the stairs – everyone wanted to get out quickly.
– Once outside, everyone stood up and looked completely terrified. We were afraid that something might happen to us.
“I’m glad everything is fine”
Throughout the earthquake, her mother was on the phone.
– She was also very scared and sad because she couldn’t do anything. She is at home in Sweden.
After 20 minutes, everything felt safe again and Destiny could go home to the apartment.
– I am very happy that everything went well. I’ve never experienced anything like this, so I totally panicked.
