Leica sold 10 times more analog cameras in 2023 than in 2015

Leica sold 10 times more analog cameras in 2023 than in 2015

Within eight years, Leica had increased sales of Leica M film models by 1,000 percent.

Film photography has become very modern, and in response to growing demand, the Leica M6 was relaunched in October 2022 – 38 years after its original release. These two factors caused sales of Leica analog cameras to rise dramatically.

Today, Leica sells three different models of the Leica M analogue: the Leica M6, the Leica MP, and the Leica MA.

Sales of analogue Leica M models have increased from 500 to about 5,000 since 2015, accounting for about 30 percent of total M camera body sales, Leica's main owner and chairman of the board Andreas Kaufmann said in an interview with French Phototrend.

– In our factories, you can still see old machines for film cameras in operation. But in 2015 we thought we were going to get rid of everything because we only produced 500 film cameras a year. But there has been a good recovery since then, and by 2023, we will have produced approximately 5,000 M6 and MP analogue units, Andreas Kaufmann told Phototrend, promising that Leica will continue to meet interest.

In 2024, the M system celebrates its 70th anniversary and there are wild rumors about new production of the first model of the Leica M3 or even earlier models, mounted with an M bayonet.

In addition to camera bodies, Leica has also begun remanufacturing certain classic lenses such as the Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 Asph, Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4, Summaron-M 28mm f/5.6 and the Thambar-M 90mm f /2.2 in the Leica Classics series.
