EU leaders after the climate summit: More is needed

European Union representatives expressed their disappointment after the UN climate meeting in Egypt.

COP27 represents a small step towards climate justice, but more is needed for the planet, says European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Egypt, known as COP27, which concluded on Sunday, decided to create a new international fund to help poor countries finance losses and repair damages caused by climate change. The EU welcomed this as a “new way of solidarity” but otherwise the results of the meeting were seen as poor.

COP27 is a small step towards climate justice, but more is needed for the planet. “We have treated some of the symptoms, but we have not treated the patient for the fever,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement on Sunday.

Ursula von der Leyen also expressed her disappointment that the meeting could not deliver a commitment from the world’s largest emitters to reduce fossil fuel use, and that there were no other commitments on climate impact reduction either.

MEP Bar Holmgren (MP) agreed with the criticism and noted that the literature on the new fund also left a lot to be desired.

– I wanted to see more clarity about who should be entitled to receive financial support from the fund, how much money should go to, and above all who should be paid, Bar-Holmgren said in a statement.
