Charles was now officially crowned king

Rainy London celebrated the coronation of King Charles on Saturday. When his mother Elizabeth II died in September 2022, Charles ascended the throne. But only now has he been officially crowned.

Westminster Abbey was packed with approximately 2,000 guests for the ceremony, including Jill Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky’s wife, Olena Zelenska, who attended the church to represent their countries.

SVT’s European correspondent David Boddy was on site in Hyde Park and spoke to people gathered to celebrate the coronation.

– It’s very exciting. A historic event, said a man with a British flag painted on his face.

King Charles arrived at the coronation in horse and carriage

Accompanied by his wife, Queen Camilla, Charles arrived at Westminster Abbey in a carriage drawn by several horses. A large crowd gathered to see the procession and cheered as the carriage passed.

Many were arrested and the prince shouted

It’s not all joy and excitement during Coronation Day. Prince Andrew, Charles’ brother, was booed by crowds as he traveled through London towards the church, The Guardian reported.

Police also arrested several members of an anti-monarchy group suspected of causing public disturbance, Reuters reported.

The King of Sweden ascended the throne

Many royal families from Britain, both home and abroad, took their seats in the church. Crown Princess Victoria and King Carl XVI Gustaf were given seats at the front of the church and were said to be the last of the royal guests to arrive, as the King of Sweden was the most senior of the guests at the coronation.

The guests swore allegiance to the king

When Charles was crowned King, priests and Prince William swore allegiance to the King, followed by guests in the chapel. Then they all said together:

“God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the king live forever.”

Celebration at Buckingham Palace

When it came time for the newly crowned monarch to wave to the crowd from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, crowds gathered to watch. When the police let people into the courtyard in front of the fort, people ran as close as possible to the balcony. With cheers from the audience, Charles and Camilla then entered the balcony, along with, among others, heir to the throne Prince William and his family.
