Expressen has previously spoken about the anger against mass tourism in the Canary Islands.

Environment organization Ben Magic has warned that the group of islands can no longer handle all the tourism and is at risk of collapse.

Dissatisfaction has also emerged among many residents, with Canary Islands Tourism Minister Jessica de Leon warning that growing “tourismophobia” in the islands is worrying.

“Historic” demonstrations are now scheduled to take place in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Palma, Birmingham Live reports.

According to the newspaper, local residents will take to the streets on April 20 to protest what they consider “excessive tourism” in the country.

“Act wisely”

The environmental organization Asociación Tinerfeña de Amigos de la Naturaleza, based in Gran Canaria, said in a statement that the situation was alarming.

– Despite the record increase in tourist numbers, poverty continues to increase. The organization says that the biodiversity and natural spaces on the islands are suffering from unprecedented deterioration, while searching for housing has become an increasingly difficult task.

The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, is now calling on protesters to “behave sensibly during the event” as tourists contribute millions to the local economy every spring and summer.

We cannot attack our main source of employment and prosperity. “It would be irresponsible,” says Fernando Clavijo, according to Birmingham Live.
