On Monday, the man, who also works at a brewery, was acquitted after being charged with drink driving.

Reports Reuters.

The reason for his acquittal was that, according to the lawyer, he suffered from a condition called autobrewery system (ABS) which roughly translates to self-brewing. It is a very unusual diagnosis, which means that bacteria or fungi in the digestive tract cause carbohydrates to ferment and turn into alcohol.

Three independent doctors are said to have confirmed the man's diagnosis.

This is ABS

Reuters wrote, referring to Belgian media, that the judge confirmed in the ruling that the man did not suffer from poisoning. Lisa Florin, a clinical biologist at AZ Sint-Lucas Hospital in Belgium, told the news agency that the alcohol produced by people with ABS is the same type found in alcoholic drinks – but they usually don't feel the effects of alcohol in the same way. .

According to a study published in Cureus: Journal of Medical Science in October 2020, getting ABS is usually preceded by eating carbohydrate-rich meals or using antibiotics, which can upset the intestines. This condition is also associated with underlying diseases and has been seen in patients with, for example, diabetes, cirrhosis, Crohn's disease and short bowel syndrome.
