During his time as a member of the European Parliament, the great Danish politician Morten Messerschmidt was found guilty of forgery and fraud.
Today he was sentenced to six months in prison.
Meserschmidt is the vice-chairman of the Danish People’s Party and a member of the Folketing.
The crimes must have been committed during a period when Messerschmidt was seen as a clear successor as party leader in the Danish People’s Party.
EU money scam
Between 2014 and 2015, Morten Messerschmitt was the leader of the European Alliance Miled og Feld. The purpose of the alliance was to bring together European parties from the nationalist right wing.
The funds allocated to the organizations were conditioned on their use for activities related to the organization and the European Union.
The crimes were discovered when Ricky Carlsson of the Danish People’s Party, a fellow of the Messerschmidt group from the European Parliament, resigned from the party.
Carlson discovered she was registered as a board member at Meld og Feld without knowing it. Carlson stated that she was asked to sign meetings she did not attend.
EU funds were used for activities that were not intended for them. Among other things, the money must have gone to fund the Danish People’s Party’s summer group meetings, media training and Messerschmidt’s own book.
In 2016, the European Union decided that the Danish People’s Party would reimburse SEK 2.9 million.
Messerschmidt himself resigned as Meld og Feld head of the European Union and took sick leave due to stress.
