Joachim and his girlfriend are vacationing on the Greek island of Skiathos.
From the hotel they see how forest fires are burning on the other side of the water.
It is a strange feeling to sit and drink drinks and watch the doomsday pass through the window.
Joachim, 30, and his girlfriend came to Greece For a week off on Saturday.
They read about the fires in the country and checked that they were not on Skiathos Island as they were on their way to vacation. There are no fires on the island they are on yet, but the country’s wildfires are notable anyway.
– We thought it was quiet and that we would not come close to the wildfire, but it is a little closer than we thought, says Joachim.
They tried to enjoy the holiday despite the fires, but according to Joachim, it’s tough.
It’s a strange feeling to sit in a restaurant and have a nice dinner when there are people dumping their homes on the other side of the water, he says.
It’s getting worse
Joachim may see the fires in Evia. The island was badly damaged by forest fires and about 1,000 people were evacuated from there with the help of boats, as the fires stopped all roads with some villages.
The fires on Evia were described as out of control. So Joachim sees it.
It burns a hell of a lot, and it gets worse, and it should be impossible to stop, he says.
I hope the fires don’t come close
Joachim and his girlfriend hope that the fires will not reach Skiathos, and if they do, he does not know what will happen.
They currently have no information on what to do next. Despite the fires in the distance, they will now try to take advantage of their holiday.
It is a strange feeling to sit and drink drinks and watch the doomsday pass through the window.
