Sweden met Germany in the final and in the first match Truls Møregaarde, 21, beat Benedikt Duda. The crowd chanted his name, won 3-0 and shouted his joy.

– Great match. “I played him the last few times, but I played great table tennis,” Moregaarde tells SVT Sport.

In the next match, Matthias Falk faced 42-year-old veteran Timo Boll. Falk had a match point in the decider but failed to tie the bag.

Then it was Christian Karlsson’s turn and that match also went to five sets, but this time the Swede was better as he defeated 20-year-old Kai Stamper.

– He is the best Carlsson in the world, says commentator Chris Harenstam.

The EC final ended with a prestigious encounter between Sweden’s biggest star Möregårdh and Boll. It was a high level table tennis match and in the end Møregardh won 3-2 in two sets (11-6, 11-8, 4-11, 6-11, 11-5).

– This is what you work for every day. It will be unreal for a long time, says the champion who won two matches in the final.

The gold medal in Malmö is the 15th ever achieved by Swedes in men’s table tennis, but the last came in 2002 with, among others, Jan Ove Waldner on the team. With 15 wins, Sweden is clearly the best.

The Swedish team at the European Commission in Malmö included: Truls Möregaarde, Matthias Falk, Anton Kalberg, Christian Karlsson and John Persson. Jürgen Persson is the captain of the national team.
