Britain has launched a project to develop the world’s most powerful laser. Called Vulcan 20-20, the device will help scientists understand and work with nuclear fusion, understand plasma, engineer renewable energy sources and further study electromagnetic fields.
Why is the laser called the most powerful on the planet, it is said to be one “Million, billion, billion times brighter than bright sunlight”, Needless to say, it can also be a very dangerous technique.
The laser will be built in Oxfordshire and funded by a new grant that secured £85m of funding for the project. Developed by the same team that designed the Vulcan laser, the most powerful laser currently available, the Vulcan 20-20 is said to have eight additional laser beams for a 20-fold increase in power. Lasting only one trillionth of a second, one pulse of this laser can be more powerful than the electricity of the entire national grid of England.
As long as the laser is built, it will take six years to build.
