It's the 2023 Ryder Cup

The Solheim Cup has just concluded and the European team has finally retained the Solheim Cup trophy after a huge drama in Spain’s Finca Cortesin.

Now it’s time for the next big team competition, the Ryder Cup, the men’s competition between Europe and America. Here’s everything you need to know about the 44th match of the series.

History Ryder Cup

The first edition was played in 1927 at the Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts, USA. After that until 1971 USA and Great Britain were rivals. From the 1973 edition to 1977, Ireland also sided with Britain.

The Ryder Cup was played for the first time between Europe and America in 1979.

Up until then, the USA had been better overall with 27 wins, three losses and one tie. Since then, Europe has won eleven, lost nine and drawn one.

Joachim Hackman was the first Swede to compete in the Ryder Cup. Hackman attended England’s Belfry in 1993, where the United States won 15-13.
Subsequent editions marked the beginning of Europe’s future dominance, with nine wins and four defeats from 1995 to 2021.

Per-Ulrik Johansson was part of and won Oak Hill in 1995 and Valderrama in 1997, when Jesper Barnevik was part of a team led by captain Sev Ballesteros. The European line-up in that edition was one of the most famous: Per-Ulrik Johansson, Jesper Barnevik, Ian Woosnam, Darren Clarke, Constantino Rocca, Thomas Bjorn, Ignacio Garrido, Bernhard Langer, Lee Westwood, José María Olazacobal, Colin Montecobal and Nick Faldo.

The latter has the second most Ryder Cup points in history with 25 points from 46 matches (among all players). Faldeau played in eleven Ryder Cups, the same number as Lee Westwood, but one less than Phil Mickelson, who played in the most Ryder Cups.
Sergio Garcia holds all Ryder Cup points – 28.5 in 45 matches, ten Ryder Cups. 13.5 points in 19 matches – particularly the foursome is Spain’s favorite discipline.

The most successful pairing in Ryder Cup history is Save Ballesteros and José María Olazabal, who combined 15 times and scored 12 European points.
Nine players have accumulated five points in a single Ryder Cup, including Dustin Johnson (2021) and Francesco Molinari (2018).

Henrik Stenson is the Swede who has participated in the most editions – five times and Europe won three times. Stenson has eleven points in 19 games.

Ludwig Aberg became the eleventh Swede to play in the Ryder Cup.
