3DMark Solar Bay – Cross-platform ray tracing test

Popular graphics testing tool 3DMark already has two tests that measure the performance of computers with graphics cards that can use real-time ray tracing, such as Nvidia’s Geforce RTX cards and AMD’s Radeon RX 6600 and beyond.

Now the company that developed the test suite, UL Solutions, is releasing another ray tracing test that, for the first time, is cross-platform and has also been released for Android (Apple has not yet added specific hardware support for raytracing in its system circuits). The test is called Solar Bay and uses Vulkan 1.1 to work the same on different platforms.

The test can be run in two different types: a short test intended to measure temporary maximum performance, which UL Solutions believes is typical of many mobile games that do not have maximum fixed graphics intensity, and a longer stress test that measures endurance by running the short test over and over for 20 minutes. minute.

video card I actually managed to run the test on a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and a computer with a Geforce RTX 4090. The latter scores 24.5 times higher with 135,800 points against 5,539 points in the quick test. The site hasn’t run a stress test, but given the mobile’s size and passive cooling, the difference will only add up.

Solar Bay is included in 3DMark, is free on the Google Play Store and costs around 400 SEK on Steam.
