The MSI Afterburner graphics card overclocking tool has been a popular alternative to Nvidia and AMD’s own software for many years. However, those who purchased a new graphics card this year were unable to use it, as the software has not been updated since December 2021.
► The future of MSI Afterburner is not clear
It was because Afterburner had previously been developed by a lone developer in Russia – Alexey “Unwinder” Nicolaychuk – and MSI could find no way to pay him after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and economic sanctions against Russia.
Now, MSI and Guru3d.com have jointly released an update that brings MSI Afterburner to version 4.6.5, with support for Nvidia’s Geforce RTX 4000 series and AMD Radeon RX 7000 family. Basic support for several upcoming graphics cards from both companies has also been added. At the same time, support for monitoring Intel Arc cards comes, but the developers note that overclocking support is late. This is because Intel only supports 64-bit code and Afterburner is still a 32-bit program.
Other news is support for DirectX 12 in the status window, early support for the 13th generation Core processors from Intel and the Ryzen 7000 family from AMD, as well as various bug fixes. At the time of writing, MSI has not updated their download link with the new version, but it is available for download via Guru3d.com.
