Sweden’s indoor bandy game creates a community value of just over 1.6 billion kronor

Soon it will be time for the Earth to turn. Indoor bandy is one of the biggest sports in Sweden and for the first time there is an analysis showing the value the sport creates for society. A new EY report shows that Swedish Indoor Bandy has implemented several initiatives in recent years to give back to the community. The analysis shows, for example, that the biggest health gain for young people is reduced risk of mental illness and improved well-being, resulting in savings of nearly SEK 80 million in healthcare. In total, the globe contributes about SEK 1.6 billion to society.

The report shows a series of initiatives that the Swedish Indoor Bandy Association (Swedish Indoor Bandy) has worked on over the past season. The association was early in Sweden to hire someone who would focus exclusively on integration issues full time. Since 2016, member associations have implemented more than 120 integration initiatives. In addition, there are long-term investments such as increasing the number of exercisers to 60,000 and by 2030 becoming a sport where there is a completely equal distribution between the sexes.

– Our analysis should help show the societal value that Swedish Indoor Bandy creates for Sweden. In the report, we focused on the areas of health and wellbeing, the value of volunteers and an inclusion perspective. The report draws attention to all the time and commitment people put into ensuring that young people and adults have access to training and context. But also how Swedish Indoor Bandy is using its reach to raise awareness of inclusion issues and how to prioritize creating an inclusive business, says Roxanne Margback, social sustainability specialist at EY.

More active people contribute SEK 40 million to lower healthcare costs

The analysis shows an estimate of the social and economic savings associated with the United Nations goal of health and well-being. By getting more active on the globe, it reduces health care costs by about SEK 40 million. For adults and the elderly, exercise means a lower risk of diabetes, dementia, and cardiovascular disease and an improved quality of life. The biggest health gain for young people is reduced risk of mental illness and improved well-being. Improving mental health saves approximately SEK 80 million in healthcare and medication costs.

Another value created is all the non-profit efforts regarding training and matches. The estimated value of all the hours that non-profit adults contribute to Globe operations is SEK 1.5 billion. This means that the combined sum of the community values ​​created by Swedish Indoor Bandy is just over SEK 1.6 billion.

EY’s analysis shows we’ve come a long way in our efforts to create community, but we need to continue to involve more people in our grassroots sport to create even more value for society, says Mikael Ahlerup, General Secretary of Swedish Indoor Bandy.

An EY analysis linked to the UN’s goal of gender equality shows that Swedish Indoor Bandy has an equal board of directors that is half women and half men. The same compensation is also offered to the men’s and women’s national teams, for example, lost income, a World Cup gold bonus, prize money in the Swedish Championship and the Swedish Cup in addition to the head coach’s salary.

Banning has mushroomed within Sports Sweden with a full-time job focusing on inclusion issues. The purpose of EY’s floorball report is to show the value that Swedish Floorball contributes to society based on Agenda 2030 and the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Primarily, the report outlines the following areas such as (1) good health and well-being, (2) quality education for all, (3) gender equality, and (3) reducing inequality. The hope is that the analysis will serve as a basis for decisions to develop Bandy’s internal Swedish operations in a sustainable way, in the short and long term.

This year’s analysis shows the social value creation contributed by activities within Swedish Indoor Bandy for the 2021/2022 season and is based on data from Swedish Indoor Bandy. Data on the number of participants and non-profit efforts was collected by Swedish Floorball through a survey in April 2022. There were 376 unique associations who responded to the survey, which corresponds to 44% of the floorball associations in Sweden. Data for all federations and teams was then extrapolated by Swedish Indoor Bandy staff in coordination with EY. The values ​​calculated in the presentation should be taken as indications of savings or value created for society. The basis of Swedish Indoor Bandy is a list based on surveys and the value factors are estimates from various published reports.
