Several avalanches in northern Norway – four dead

The avalanches occurred in four different places in northern Norway, VG Norway reports. These are the sites of Kåfjård, Lyngen, Reinøya and Nordreisa. The newspaper confirmed that four people were killed. Two in Reinøya, one in Lyngen and one in Nordreisa.

At Lyngseidet in Lyngen, five people are said to have been swept away in an avalanche. One was confirmed dead while the other was being treated for serious injuries.

According to the local rescue service, about five tourists are from Italy.

An avalanche pulled the barn into the sea

In Renoia in Karlsøy municipality, two people were first reported missing, but later in the afternoon the rescue service confirmed that they had both been found dead.

Many media reported that a house and a barn were pulled into the sea with a slide. According to VG, the two were found dead at sea.

– It’s white hell here. The entire mountain side receded. Goats lying in the sea. Chaos and complete despair reign in the village. There hasn’t been a landslide here in a hundred years, says one person who Nordlys spoke to.

In Reinøya, the village of Grotnesdalen has been evacuated.

In the landslide that occurred in Mandalen in the municipality of Kaafjord, all the people who were in the vicinity must have survived. However, several people were said to have been trapped by avalanches and are being considered for evacuation. An avalanche hit a barn with 100 animals. According to preliminary information, the animals should have survived.

Red Cross volunteers are helping with large-scale relief teams in the rescue work, but weather conditions have made the work difficult, VG reports. Both the mayor of Lingen and the Red Cross are urging people in the affected areas to stay at home and not go out.
