SaltX has been granted a patent for its electro calcining technology

SaltX Technology has developed an electrified solution for the industrial calcination process. Calcination means that the material is modified by heating to very high temperatures to change its properties. A process used, among other things, in the manufacture of lime and cement. The company has now patented the electro calcining technology in Sweden.

The technical solution, EAC (Electric Arc Calciner) replaces fossil fuels during heating with renewable electricity and sequesters carbon dioxide released from materials during heating. The innovation provides a completely emissions-free manufacturing process.

The approved patent relates to Sweden and covers several criteria such as cyclone design, properties of plasma burners, material circulation and CO2 separation. In addition to eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from, for example, quicklime production, the technology brings many other benefits, Lars Krohn, SaltX’s head of innovation tells us;

“EAC offers the opportunity to control and control materials in a much better way compared to the traditional method. In addition, electric heating with plasma burners offers significant advantages in terms of heat transfer and energy efficiency.”

In addition to the lime and cement industries, areas of use of the patented electric calcination technology include materials such as magnesium, lithium and carbonate minerals. The company has also applied for patent protection internationally, says Corey Blackman, CTO at SaltX:

“Patent protection is another important piece of the puzzle that now exists, and we look positively at our opportunities to extend protection to all markets of interest to us.”

EAC (Electric Arc Calciner) technology also forms the basis for SaltX’s other business area, energy storage, where it is used as a charge reactor for energy storage materials.
