YouTube ends banner ads. The platform thinks it’s annoying viewers.

In a forum, YouTube announced that the platform will end banner ads, which only appear on the web, from April 6th. YouTube writes in the post:
Starting April 6, 2023, the Overlay Ads ad format will no longer appear on YouTube to help improve the viewer experience and shift engagement to higher-performing ad formats on desktop and mobile. Overlay Ads “is an older ad format that runs on desktop and causes disruption to viewers. We expect to see limited impact for most creators as engagement shifts to other ad formats.”

Now, users on YouTube without a Premium subscription will encounter ads in the form of skippable video ads, non-skippable video ads, and “bumper ads” of up to six seconds in length.
