There are five levels of autonomy for self-driving cars – in level three there’s no requirement to have your hands on the wheel, and you don’t need to focus on what’s happening on the road which is a requirement in level two. Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot technology, which is Level 3, is now approved in Nevada, USA. However, only at speeds up to about 65 km / h.
The driver’s face and head must remain in front of the sensors in the vehicle, but do not need to keep their eyes on the road when Drive Pilot is activated. Other companies like Waymo and Cruise think Level Three is a move that can be unsafe, and instead they invest directly in Level Four, where the driver doesn’t have to think about how to drive the car at all.
