No seat belt – fined by Rishi Sunak

In a statement on Twitter, Lancashire Police wrote on Friday – without directly naming the British prime minister – about the case.

“Today we granted the 42-year-old from London a conditional offer of sentence”.

A British Penalty Order – like the Swedish version – basically allows you to admit a minor offense and pay a fine, then avoid a trial.

“Lack of Judgment”

The British Prime Minister’s Office, Downing Street, wrote in a statement that Sunak “fully accepts that this was a mistake and he has apologised”.

“He will definitely pay the fine,” the report continued.

Sunak apologized for his “lack of judgment”.

According to the BBC, the fine is around 100 pounds (closer to 1,300 Swedish kroner).

In the video in question, filmed Thursday and produced for Sunak’s social media platforms, the conservative — and beltless — leader and prime minister sit in the backseat of a car and talk. The trip was to Lancashire in North West England, where Sunak was to draw attention to development issues in the area.

Not the first time

Even before the present incident, Sunak’s travel habits had been the subject of debate in England. His political rivals were quick to point out that the Prime Minister had recently used a private jet to make several short flights.

This is not the first time Sunak has been fined by the police.

While serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sunak was fined after attending a Downing Street meeting in June 2020 that breached the government’s social distancing rules at the time.
