Google Pixel 6a wins blind test of mobile phone cameras

Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD on social media, has done blind tests with mobile cameras in recent years to see which phones launched this year take the best photos. Through social media, people were allowed to vote for the best photos and the results were shown in the form of a video. This year is round two and MKBHD has redesigned the voting model to give phones a fairer chance and this year’s winner is a bit of a surprise.

Unlike previous years where photos from different cell phones were displayed with each other, this year’s edition did The poll has been rebuilt to apply the Elo rating, which is also used, among other things, in chess to evaluate a player’s ability based on wins. With the Elo system implemented, users were allowed to vote on which photos they thought looked best in three different categories; standardand low light portrait mode. In total, the number of votes reached 22.1 million from more than 600,000 users.

In the top menu we find two Pixel phones and an Asus phone. More specifically, the Pixel 6a takes the top spot, the Pixel 7 Pro takes the second spot and the Asus Zenfone 9 takes the third spot. At the other end of the Elo spectrum were the Sony Xperia Mark IV and Moto Edge 30 Ultra. The results that stand out a bit are that the Oppo Find X5 Pro ended up at the top for standard shooting, but it finished 15th in portrait mode.

Marques also offers a reflection on the results, highlighting that dark images in the test were generally removed in favor of brighter images. However, there is a clear limit to light and balanced exposure photos outweigh overexposed photos.
